Inverted Nipple Surgery
Inverted nipples are very common. They happen when the ducts leading to the nipple are overly tight. This causes the nipple to be pulled into the surrounding areola. This cosmetic issue can affect one nipple or both and may also appear later in life as a result of trauma to the breast or breastfeeding. An estimated 10 to 20 percent of all women have inverted nipples, which can cause feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment.
Dr. Natoli can correct inverted nipples with surgery designed to give the nipples a more natural appearance. There are generally two procedures which can achieve this result: one which preserves the milk ducts and one that does not. Inverted nipple surgery can achieve symmetry between the nipples on both breasts, leading to beautiful, natural-looking, and well-balanced breasts.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Natoli will address any concerns and questions you may have about the procedure. Your consultation may also involve viewing a 3-D Vectra computer image that uses state of the art technology to show how you may look after surgery.
Inverted nipple surgery is performed as outpatient surgery. You will be given a local anesthetic in combination with a light sedative. Dr. Natoli will make an incision at the base of the nipple, to release shortened milk ducts or scar tissue. Sutures will be placed under the nipple to hold it in its new, permanently out position.
Patients experience minor discomfort and some swelling or bruising afterward, but little, if any pain. Stitches are typically removed about four days following inverted nipple surgery, and patients can usually resume their normal daily routines about a day after the procedure. During this time, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for a few weeks.
