Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment of one or both breasts in adult males. While it can be embarrassing, it is a very common condition that leads many men to seek plastic surgery. This condition is generally the result of too much estrogen (a female hormone) being produced, or too little testosterone (a male hormone), which leads to swelling of the glandular tissue, forming an enlarged breast. Male breast reduction surgery with Dr. Natoli can not only reduce excess fat and tissue from the breasts, but it can also go a long way restoring one’s self-esteem.
Although the exact cause of gynecomastia is unknown, possible causes of the condition include:
- Obesity
- Natural aging
- Use of herbal testosterone additives
- Testicular hormone production irregularities
- Some prescription medications and medications containing estrogen
- Anabolic steroid use
- Klinefelter Sydrome
- Gilbert’s Syndrome
- Puberty
- Problems with liver function
Gynecomastia can be discreet and confidentially treated with male breast reduction surgery that can provide a re-contoured, more toned-looking chest area and a significant boost to self-confidence.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Natoli will address any concerns and questions you may have about the procedure. Your consultation may also involve viewing a 3-D Vectra computer image that uses state of the art technology to show how you may look after surgery.
During male breast reduction surgery, Dr. Natoli will make small incisions hidden in the armpit or around the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple). Excess skin, fat, and/or tissue will be removed, and liposuction may also be used to suction out extra fat. The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia and typically takes one to two hours to complete.
Male breast reduction procedures can be performed by Dr. Natoli in a fully equipped surgery center that is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF). This distinction is only given to facilities that strive for the highest standard of care.
Patients can expect to experience some swelling and discomfort after surgery and can typically resume their normal daily routines within the first few days after the procedure.
