Eyelid Surgery

During your initial consultation, Dr. Natoli will address any concerns and questions you may have about the procedure. Your consultation may also involve viewing a 3-D Vectra computer image that uses state of the art technology to show how you may look after surgery.
Eyelid surgery may not the best option for those wishing to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet or wrinkles. Treatments such as injectable fillers or facelift surgery can address those issues.
Depending on your own unique needs, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery typically involves the removal of excess skin that is affecting your vision and/or giving you a tired, older appearance. The remaining skin is lifted and reattached for a smoother, more refreshed look. Upper eyelid surgery can also help improve vision for those with skin that is affecting your ability to see. Residual scarring should be barely visible as incisions for the procedure are made in the crease of the upper eyelid. A local anesthetic or general anesthetic can be used for upper eyelid surgery. The procedure takes from one to three hours to complete and is generally performed on an outpatient basis.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
With lower eyelid surgery, a small incision is made under the lower eyelashes and excess skin, fat, and muscle are removed to reduce the appearance of bagginess under the eyes. The remaining skin is reshaped into a smoother and firmer appearance. This procedure is typically completed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis and takes from one to three hours to complete.
Patients can expect some degree of swelling and bruising during the first two weeks of recovery. Any discomfort can be managed with medication. Patients may also experience sensitivity to light, tearing, and temporary blurry or double vision. Normal routines can typically be resumed after a few days. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two to three weeks after eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
